exacqVision 4.5 Released

exacqVision 4.5Version 4.5 of exacqVision Video Management Software has just been released. This latest release, compatible with all exacqVision Hybrid and IP video surveillance systems, incorporates new features and enhancements, and continues our quest for rapid, incremental updates.

Version 4.5 is available for download here. Key features in the 4.5 Release include:

  • Serial keywords used as Event Linking and Monitoring Sources
  • New RTSP Plugin – Video/Audio Streaming from RTSP Devices
  • ONVIF PTZ & Presets added
  • Samsung 5000-Series IP Cameras Supported through ONVIF
  • Bosch ONVIF Enhancements
  • New Panasonic WJ-GXE500 encoder support
  • Panasonic protocol analog PTZ enhancements
  • Audio support for Panasonic IP cameras
  • Arecont – privacy mask enabled in latest models
  • Enterprise System License Management from My Systems Page
  • Finnish Language Support

Here are some of the features in detail:

Serial Keywords used as Event Linking and Monitoring Sources
A major new feature in 4.5 is the ability to create unique events on serial keywords, either from UART or IP serial ports. By tapping into the power of exacqVision event linking, creating unique events on serial keywords greatly enhances the configurability of exacqVision to act on events. Some of the key uses of this are:

Point of Sale (POS) – By using keywords, specific red-flag transactions could be subject to additional scrutiny, such as logging, e-mail alerts, move to a specific PTZ preset, etc. The keyword events are also visible in the graphical search timeline, creating an easy path for case building.

Video Analytics – Using the event per keyword also opens up support for a host of video analytic packages. In particular, keywords used with the new RTSP plugin (also in 4.5) enable the use of the full analytic functions with VideoIQ IP cameras (discussed further below).

Access Control – Using keywords with access control systems can enable video recording or other actions. Keywords can come from an access control server, or directly from IP readers.

Easy to Deploy – Using keywords with exacqVision’s powerful event linking function means integrators can easily configure systems to respond to a wide variety of events, all with zero programming.

Keyword Demo – We’ve setup a web page to demo the event-per-keyword functionality, here:
http://www.exacq.com/epk

In this demo, you can type in "clock" or "front door" or "side door" or "disco" or combinations of keywords. Pre-defined event linking will swing the PTZ camera to those locations and, if selected, turn on the famous Exacq disco ball via the relay outputs.

Exacq Event Per Keyword demo

New RTSP Plugin – Video/Audio Streaming from RTSP Devices
Version 4.5 includes a new Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) plugin, enabling the connecting of a wide variety of video devices including a large population of IP cameras. RTSP is a widely-used streaming protocol, and most every IP camera vendor supports it to one degree or another. Our RTSP plugin is based on live555, which is the code base for many streaming applications, including the ubiquitous VLC.

VideoIQVideoIQ Analytic Cameras – A key benefit of this plugin, combined with the Keyword eventing above, is the ability to use the video analytics found in VideoIQ cameras. Version 4.5 allows the connection of any VideoIQ IP camera, and enables actions to happen based on analytic events from the camera. Analytics available in VideoIQ cameras include:

• Perimeter protection
• Virtual fence or “tripwire”
• Unmanned site protection
• Crowd formation monitoring
• Direction of travel monitoring
• Outdoor inventory control
• Indoor object removed

Large Variety of RTSP Cameras – RTSP is broadly used by IP camera vendors, and as such the RTSP plugin enables the use of most every IP camera, from consumer-grade up through the highest-end cameras. RTSP does not support motion detection at the edge, but is useful when basic video streaming form just about any camera is necessary. A fairly comprehensive listing of available RTSP-supported IP cameras is here.

System License Management Enhancements on My Systems Page
In Version 4.5 the process of managing and updating system licenses has been greatly enhanced, and can be done right from the My Systems page. Whether a single license key for a single server, or hundreds of license keys for an enterprise installation, the process has been made quick and easy.

Individual License Update -To update individual system license keys, go to the My Systems page, right click on any system in the Subscription column, select Update, and select either Update License from file or Update License from text.

Batch License Update – For enterprise installations with dozens or even hundreds of servers, license update is now entirely automated. A single .CSV file with all MAC addresses and License Keys is generated by Exacq. The user simply imports that one file and it applies the license keys to all servers. The user can also easily export all server license keys for easy updating.

Street Test: Exacq + Arecont AV8185

One of our primary distributors for China, nnodal, put up an interesting blog post today, experimenting with exacqVision VMS and Arecont panoramic cameras at a busy intersection in the city. They shared some great video footage. Their blog post starts out:

In preparation for an upcoming project we decided to put together a little test scenario involving the exacqvision VMS and an Arecont AV8185 180 degree view 8 megapixel camera.

Our setup on the street
Our setup included an Alienware Laptop running the exacqVision enterprise server & client, an Arecont AV8185 camera mounted on a 3 meter AV stand, a Netgear 8 port POE router, a 5 meter IP cable and power from the nearby flower stand.

Video of the Setup (including lots of interested onlookers)

Results
Here’s a video of what the system was showing us. Forgive the resolution – remember this was compressed once for the screen capture & again when uploaded to VIMEO.

Although the video appears choppy this appears to stem from the 5.5 fps limitation on each of the 4 cameras when running at full 2 megapixel res – 8 megs across the board. In reality the 5.5 fps is plenty fast enough to capture vehicle license plates and other fast-moving objects in the camera’s view. All things being said we were extremely pleased with the performance of the solution – especially considering there was absolutely zero configuration of the cameras prior to shooting the video.

The original-resolution exacqVision video export is here:
http://nnodal.com/sharedfiles/180cam.exe  (350MB)

Below are some screen captures from the video export. Click on each for a larger view:

Using the exacqVision digital zoom, we can clearly read the license plate number:

And again using exacqVision digital zoom:

Other views from the Arecont cameras:

The original nnodal blog post is here. Our thanks to Tony Luce and everyone at nnodal for this interesting experiment.

The Road So Far to Nonproprietary Systems

Exacq in Security Sales & Integration Technology Issue December 2010The December 2010 Technology Issue of Security Sales & Integration magazine features a roundtable discussion entitled The Road So Far to Nonproprietary Systems with John Moss of S2 Security, Dan Moceri of Convergint, and Dave Underwood of Exacq.

John Moss starts off:

It has been more than a decade since the intertwined topics of open systems, standards and convergence entered the physical security industry debate. But what does it all mean and how much progress are we making?

As part of its annual Technology issue, SSI invited me to examine the state of flux that is convergence in our industry. In doing so, I recently moderated a discussion with Dave Underwood and Dan Moceri and asked them to provide some insight. Underwood is CEO of Indianapolis-based Exacq Technologies, a manufacturer of VMS solutions. Moceri brings the integrator’s perspective to the discussion. As CEO of Chicago-based Convergint Technologies, a national systems integrator, he is on the frontline of making systems interoperate in the new environment.

Do you agree that security manufacturers and their products have become more open?

Dave Underwood: I do believe this to be true. In many ways the physical security industry is mirroring the IT industry. The IT market and even the consumer computer market have been embracing open platforms and open standards for years now, contributing to their tremendous growth.

Today our customers and end users in the physical security industry want to build best-of-breed solutions just like they do in the IT market. End users want to choose the best hardware, the best components and even the best operating system for their installation and they expect it to all work together.

Dave Underwood, Exacq Technologies - quote

Dan Moceri: The trend is clearly toward more openness. Most new product platforms are open and much easier to integrate. There are, however, many legacy systems still installed today that do not have the same degree of openness and they become a challenge to integrate to third-party systems.

 Dan Moceri, Convergint - quote

How do you think that the convergence of physical security with IT has impacted openness and innovation in physical security products, and what role have end users played versus system integrators?

Underwood: One thing we have seen is a new breed of integrators who not only understand IP surveillance video, but they are very network savvy as well. In addition, we’re now seeing more and more IT integrators jumping into the physical security industry as they see this as another solid offering for their customers.

A successful IT integrator already has a solid customer base that he or she sees on a regular basis to update software and systems or to provide regular maintenance. Now they have yet another service to offer these customers. The end result is that our integrators are getting smarter and have even more to offer to their customers — the end users.

Moceri: Many opportunities are now available to the traditional security integrator who embraces a solutions-based integration model. The physical security integrator can now provide high level software-based integration solutions that previously were provided by specialty IT integrators. This allows security integrators to capture a larger revenue stream from their customers.

John Moss, S2 - quote

The entire discussion is well worth reading. You can read the full article here.

Exacq named Axis ADP Gold Partner

Axis Gold ADP Partner programWe’re pleased to report that Exacq Technologies has been named by Axis Communications as a Gold Partner in their Application Development Partner program.

Axis’ ADP program assists the top software and hardware manufacturers in the complete integration of Axis network products in end-user solutions. The Gold designation is the highest level of achievement in the ADP program and is only offered to partners with significant worldwide market share in the growing IP-based physical security industry.

In a press release accompanying this designation, a case study of an Exacq-Axis deployment was cited:

Thompson School District & ExacqNearly three years ago Thompson School District of Loveland, CO (32 public schools, 16,000 students, 2100 staff) installed an exacqVision hybrid NVR at one of its 34 buildings, which allowed the district to incorporate existing analog cameras while adding Axis IP cameras. Today the district has migrated its analog video to IP video with 15 servers from Exacq all running exacqVision VMS software and supporting more than 140 Axis IP cameras of various types, of which 33 are PTZ and more than 60 are HD. The presence of the systems has resulted in fewer incidents and insurance claims plus an overall feeling of safety and protection in the district.

“We’ve experimented with other VMS systems and DVRs in the past, but we never got the results we wanted,” notes Josh Coseo, Security Systems Engineer of Thompson School District. “The exacqVision system paired with the powerful Axis network cameras was easy to install and operate. At least half of the employees in the school system use Macintosh computers, so it was important to have a client that is convenient for everyone to use. Anyone with access can easily and quickly get what they need from the exacqVision client and Axis cameras spread throughout the network in the district.”

“Axis is a partner-driven company, so we thrive off of success stories like the one at Thompson School District, which is the end-result of our close collaboration with a qualified and dedicated network video partner like Exacq,” said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager, Axis Communications Inc. “Installations like these that lead to satisfied and secure end-users will continue to drive the adoption of IP-based video systems.”

Zooming In on Security Market – IBJ on Exacq

Indianapolis Business JournalThe Indianapolis Business Journal edition for the week of September 27, 2010, has a feature story on Exacq Technologies entitled Zooming In on Security Market. The article starts out:

Think of video surveillance technology and what comes to mind? Maybe a corporate security officer with a Stacy Keach mustache, squinting behind a blurry TV monitor.

Exacq feature in Indianapolis Business JournalOr, as they do it at Exacq Technologies, an employee whips out his iPhone to reveal thumbnail videos from cameras watching its Fishers headquarters. He taps one box to pull up a full-screen image from a camera atop the roof. Tapping again, he pans and zooms in on the parking lot. Talk about the ultimate app.

“It gives even a small-business owner the ability to manage their business without being on-site,” said Exacq President David Underwood, who co-founded the maker of video management system software and servers.

Among its customers is no less than Apple Computer, which uses Exacq’s video surveillance system at its California campus and in some of its retail stores.

The article is fairly in-depth, with interviews with Exacq customers, industry analysts, and a competitive assessment. One of the Exacq security integrators interviewed was Koorsen Security Technology, a SecurityNet and PSA Security reseller:

For an upstart company to come in and win customers in this segment is no easy feat, said Skip Sampson, vice president of Indianapolis-based Koorsen Security Technology.

Security types tend to be conservative and hard to penetrate with a new brand, he said, explaining that a video surveillance system can last for decades.

“You’re normally married to [a brand] for a long time,” he added.

What’s helped Exacq penetrate the market quickly has been that its top executives have worked for other security firms, Sampson said.

The full article can be read here.
